Verde Adds Four Women to Landscape Crew
November 2016. Rosalia Flores, Zoemy Tuz, Claudia Gonzalez and Manuela Interian all joined the Verde Lanscape crew as temporary on-call employees to work as a part of Verde’s social enterprise landscape crew. The majority of the work will be on the Cully Park project to help with the planting and earthscaping that is ramping up in the next few months.
“Because Verde is the general contractor on Cully Park we are able to provide more employment opportunities here in the neighborhood. We took the opportunity to diversify our crew and hire 4 women from the neighborhood. The great thing is that although they started their work at Cully Park, they are gaining skills that make it possible for them to go out with the crew on other projects now.” Says Ricardo Moreno, the Landscape Program Manager at Verde. He also adds that although the work is temporary it could lead to part-time or full time employment opportunities with the Crew.
Rosalia Flores worked as an assistant carpenter in Mexico City, and at various factories in LA before moving to Portland. Before now, Rosalia didn’t have much landscaping experience. She says, “I never imagined that I would work in landscaping. I feel really happy working here, its a beautiful experience to be at work sharing ideas and working side by side with the men on the crew. They have been really respectful and great teachers. I hope that I can keep working here. I love learning about plants and trees and want to keep learning. I am so happy to have a job and be a part of the Verde team”
